What is it?
A Daniel Fast is a spiritual fast based on the example of the prophet Daniel in the Bible, where people focus on prayer, humility, and seeking God while eating a very simple, plant-based diet.

What is the Biblical Background?
The Daniel Fast comes from Daniel 1 and Daniel 10, where Daniel chose to avoid rich foods and dedicate himself to prayer and fasting so he could seek God’s wisdom, favor, and understanding.
“I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth…” — Daniel 10:3

What is the purpose of the Daniel Fast?
In the Bible, Daniel fasted as an act of humility, obedience, and devotion to God. His fast wasn’t about food—it was about honoring God and seeking Him with his whole heart.  When Daniel and his friends were taken to Babylon, they refused to eat the king’s rich food because it would have defiled them before God.  Much of the king’s food likely included unclean meats and foods that were forbidden under Jewish dietary laws (Leviticus 11). Eating it would mean disobeying God. The king’s meals were often dedicated to pagan gods before being served. Eating it could be seen as participating in idol worship.  Daniel “resolved that he would not defile himself” (Daniel 1:8). This shows deep conviction and commitment to honoring God, even under pressure.  Refusing the food meant risking punishment, but they trusted God more than they feared consequences.  Instead, they ate vegetables and drank water.  God honored their obedience, and they became healthier, stronger, and wiser than the others.  He fasted to seek God’s direction, revelation, and breakthrough—and God answered him with divine understanding and spiritual insight.
The purpose is to grow closer to God, increase prayer and spiritual focus, seek clarity, breakthrough, and renewal, and to practice discipline and humility.  When we make our flesh submit to the Spirit, we humble ourselves before God, draw closer to Him, and align our lives with God’s Will.
